Turo PHX lockbox rule: remote access installs for Phoenix hostsVisible lockboxes are out at PHX. Go keyless for $300 a car.

From November 15, Turo prohibits lockboxes that can be seen from outside the car at Phoenix Sky Harbor and encourages remote access instead. We're in Phoenix installing it through November 30: the Qarhami Track device plus installation, $300 a car. Your guest unlocks from a link on their phone, and the key never leaves the car.

  • The guest taps Unlock on a link: no app, no account, no key handoff
  • Device + installation, $300 a car, through Nov 30
  • Hosts are booking now, and install slots are filling up

Price depends on make and model; some vehicles, such as certain Porsche and Range Rover models, aren't included. Sign up or call and we confirm your cars.

What Turo told Phoenix hosts

The rule, in Turo's words. Not ours.

Turo emailed Phoenix hosts on October 30 and updated its PHX key management guidance. Here is what it says, so you can decide for your own fleet. Many hosts we've spoken to this week hadn't seen it yet.

"Beginning Nov. 15, 2026, Turo will prohibit the use of external lockboxes that can be seen from outside the vehicle, such as window lockboxes, at PHX. Permitted lockboxes include license plate lockboxes, tow hitch lockboxes, and lockboxes that attach below the vehicle bumper. Hosts whose vehicles support remote access technology are encouraged to use this feature and to keep the physical key hidden inside the vehicle […]."

"Lockbox and key security will be monitored by airport, law enforcement, and parking personnel, who will notify Turo and provide evidence of offenders. Hosts who leave keys unsecured or use visible lockboxes may lose delivery privileges at PHX."

Remote access technology

Guests lock and unlock without a physical key handoff, and the key stays hidden inside the car.

Qarhami is an independent product and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Turo. Whether a handoff method meets Turo's requirement is Turo's decision; check your host email and Turo's PHX page for the current wording.

How remote access works

No box, no code, no meet-up. The guest's phone is the key.

Remote access means the car itself locks and unlocks on command. Here is a whole trip, from the install to the return.

  1. Qarhami Track, the hardwired device

    Once per car

We hardwire a Qarhami Track to the car's own locks.

It sits out of sight behind the dash and talks to the car's factory central locking. Nothing on the window, nothing on the plate.

  2. Confirmation in the app: Link copied successfully

    Each booking

You send the guest one Shared Access link.

It opens one car, for that trip's window only. Copy it from the trip in the app and paste it into your Turo message.

  3. What the guest sees: the car, the trip dates, and Lock, Unlock and Honk

    At pickup

The guest walks up and taps Unlock.

No app to download, no account. The doors unlock, and your app shows it was done. The key is already inside, so they drive off.

  4. Confirmation in the app: Door locked, QRA2041, Silver Toyota Camry

    At return

They leave the key inside and tap Lock.

The car confirms it's locked. When the trip window ends, the link stops working on its own.

Where's the key?

Inside the car, out of sight, the whole time. Nobody carries it, nobody hides it in a box.

Guest's phone died?

Unlock it yourself from the app, from anywhere. Lock, unlock and horn each come back with a confirmation from the car.

Flight moved, or trip cancelled?

Extend the guest's window, or revoke the link. A revoked link is dead even if it was forwarded or screenshotted.

From the founder

I'm in Phoenix for this. Come find me at the shop.

"I run cars on Turo myself, and I built Qarhami because lockboxes, spreadsheets and five apps were running me. When Turo's PHX email landed, I booked a flight. I'm in Phoenix through November 30 with my installer team, and I'm staying until every host who signs up is done."

"Sign up below. Someone from the team gets in touch about scheduling, and if you want to see an install before you commit, come to the shop at 36th and Washington. I'll be there."

Phoenix, through November

Areeb is touring PHX until the end of November. Stay in the loop.

Questions from Phoenix hosts

The PHX rule and the install, answered.

What did Turo change for hosts at PHX?

From November 15, 2026, Turo prohibits external lockboxes that can be seen from outside the vehicle, such as window lockboxes, at Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX).

License plate, tow hitch and under-bumper lockboxes stay permitted. Turo encourages hosts whose vehicles support remote access technology to use it and to keep the physical key hidden inside the vehicle. Turo says lockbox and key security will be monitored at the airport, and hosts who use visible lockboxes or leave keys unsecured may lose delivery privileges at PHX.

How does remote access actually work?

We hardwire a Qarhami Track to the car's own locks. For each trip you send the guest one Shared Access link, for that car and that trip window only.

The guest opens the link on their phone, with no app to download and no account to make, walks up to the car and taps Unlock. The car unlocks and your app shows it. The key is already inside the car, out of sight, so the guest drives off with it and leaves it there at return. When the trip ends the link stops working on its own, and you can revoke it or extend it at any time.

Where does the key go?

It stays inside the car, out of sight, for the whole trip and between trips.

Nobody carries it to the car, and nothing hangs on the window. Our installer shows you a sensible place for it in each car when they install. Because the car is locked until a guest with a live link unlocks it, the key is never exposed to anyone walking past.

What if the guest's phone dies, or the link doesn't work?

You unlock the car yourself from the Qarhami app, from anywhere.

Lock, unlock and horn work from your phone or your co-host's, and each command comes back with a confirmation from the car. If a flight moves you can extend the guest's window, and if you need to take access back you can revoke the link, which stops it working even if it was forwarded or screenshotted.

Is Qarhami remote access the kind Turo describes?

Turo describes remote access technology as guests locking and unlocking the car without a physical key handoff. That is what a Shared Access link does on a car with a hardwired Qarhami Track.

Whether a handoff method meets Turo's requirement is Turo's decision, so read your host email and Turo's PHX page. Qarhami is an independent product and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Turo.

What does the $300 bundle include?

The Qarhami Track device and its professional installation, for $300 a car, through November 30, 2026.

Bought separately, the device is $100 and a Phoenix installer usually charges $250 to $300, so the same setup normally runs $350 to $400. The install is wired for remote lock and unlock on compatible vehicles, and we set the car up in the app with your first Shared Access link. Price depends on make and model, and some vehicles, such as certain Porsche and Range Rover models, aren't included; sign up or get in touch and we confirm each of your cars. Then $10 a car a month on the Premium plan.

Which cars work?

Most cars and light trucks with factory central locking, which is nearly every rental in a Phoenix fleet.

What each car can do depends on the vehicle, its model year and the installation, and we confirm it for your cars before anything is booked. Some vehicles, such as certain Porsche and Range Rover models, aren't part of the $300 bundle. Every car also gets live location, trip history, tow and tamper alerts and a backup battery.

Can I keep a lockbox instead?

Yes, if it is a type Turo still permits at PHX: a license plate lockbox, a tow hitch lockbox or one that attaches below the bumper.

A hidden box still holds a working key, and someone still has to get the guest the code. Many hosts with a permitted box add a Qarhami Track anyway for live location and alerts. Tell us when we call and we'll advise car by car, including whether a Starter Disable Kill Switch makes sense for a car that sleeps at your lot.

How long does an install take, and where?

About 30 to 45 minutes for the Qarhami Track, plus time for the lock wiring, which depends on the car.

Installs run at a host's shop near Sky Harbor, at 36th Street and Washington, or on site at your lot for larger fleets. Qarhami's founder and the installer team are in Phoenix through November 30. When you sign up, we book the slot with you.

What happens after I sign up?

Someone from the Qarhami team calls or texts you to confirm your cars, the price for each and your install slots.

Fleets of five or more are staged: the first cars go in before November 15 and the rest follow on a schedule we agree with you. You pay per installed car; nothing is charged when you sign up.

What does $10 a month include?

The Premium plan, with the car's location updated every minute, and the whole Qarhami app.

That covers the Dashboard and live map, Trips with Turo bookings from your forwarded confirmation emails, Shared Access links, remote lock, unlock and horn, Geofences, Tracking evidence with CSV export, Maintenance, Co-Hosting with seven permissions per car, Trip Tolls and Reports. Move a car to Premium Plus at $13 or Ultimate at $15 whenever you want faster updates.
